This workshop is for lay caregivers, teachers, and deacons.  The workshop offers you an introduction to caring for those who are hurting, have experienced loss, or have great anxiety or doubt about the future.


Workshop Outline:


  1. People who are hurting

    • Definition, characteristics, and symptoms of a crisis

    • Crises people may experience

  • Major characteristics of a crisis

  • How people interpret crisis

  • Phases in a crisis

  • Characteristics of people who best survive a crisis


  1. Principles for caring

  • Active listening

  • Directing the conversation

  • Dealing with emotions

  • Focusing on solutions

  • Contracting for action

  • Follow-up


The workshop is interactive and involves group discussion. This interaction is limited to the size of the group and the time allotted. Recommended minimum time allotment: 2 hours.


Other workshops are available for Counseling Fundamentals, or for specific issues such as helping those who are depressed, grieving, afraid, angry, stressed, struggling with their identity, in a marriage crisis, or recovering from a divorce. The Biblical Care Ministry Seminar is a more extensive version of this workshop (15 CEU's).
