Christian LifeSkills Back to School - Parenting Tips
· Start in late summer. Put children on the school bedtime/wake-up schedule several weeks before school starts. · Create a study space with your children. Use that space for homework and school supplies. Help them plan a time to work on the homework. · Calm back-to-school jitters. Visit the school before classes begin to help ease jitters. Help the child locate classrooms, offices, and restrooms, and introduce them to the teacher when possible. · Be involved in your child's education. Attend school parent/teacher conferences. Get to know the teacher, and stay abreast of how your child is doing. Work with the teacher and your child to resolve problems. Volunteer at the school. · Allow for scheduled down time. Like adults, children benefit from quiet time alone to unwind from their day at school. · Reward achievements. Let kids know that you are proud of them when they accomplish projects or take part in special activities at school. Praise your children when they are successful, and support them when they are not. · Make learning a valued family activity. Talk about school projects, and plan out-of-school learning activities with books, hobbies, and visits to a museum, aquarium, or planetarium. · Help your kids respect learning. Talk about education and its benefits. Show your children that you value learning by attending school functions and taking an interest in their books and school projects. · Remember, YOU are the most important teacher! You play the biggest role in the education of your children. Your attitudes and opinions about school and education make a strong impression on your children. Teach them well.
